Moxie Pictures director Rory Kennedy’s latest documentary offers a deep dive into the 30-plus years of Synanon’s rise and fall. Now on HBO, the film begins in 1958, when a landmark breakthrough in the treatment of heroin addicts became a source of controversial therapy called ‘The Synanon Game.’
Soon enough, its founder, Charles Dederich, evolved into a cult leader and eventually faced allegations of child abuse and attempted murder in the 1970s. Rory, joined by her husband and producing partner Mark Bailey, gained access to extensive archival material for this four-part documentary, featuring reflections and insights from past members.
The Synanon Fix is now available to stream on Max, with new episodes debuting on subsequent Mondays.
