Errol Morris’s “The B Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography” premieres this month

Moxie’s Errol Morris gets a tour of Elsa Dorfman’s backyard archives in The B Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography, which is set to be released on June 30, 2017. The trailer is a colorful glimpse into the personal world of Dorfman’s photography.

Morris takes a close look into Dorfman’s life and career as she nears retirement. Having used the giant 20″ x 24″ Polaroid camera her whole career, Dorfman mastered a unique craft from her Cambridge, Massachusetts home. She rose to prominence in the early 1980’s, photographing beat poets, rockstars, families, and more.

The B Side is a departure from Morris’s usual style, leaving his hefty Interrotron camera behind and switching to a more mobile setup, allowing him to follow the energetic Dorfman more freely.

The film’s trailer gives a short look into Elsa Dorfman’s personality and art, teasing us with some of the fascinating personalities captured by a photographic technology now well past its obsolescence, but not its ability to uniquely capture a moment.
