SHOOT’s coveted list is a “spring ensemble of up-and-coming directors” who are “poised to break new ground for many seasons to come.”
Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini are the first names among the impressive collection, noted for their unconventional approach to documentary filmmaking. Most recently, the directorial duo won the Grand Jury Prize in U.S. Documentary at Sundance for Dina, an eccentric love story following two autistic individuals. That documentary marks the second feature for Dan & Antonio, whose Mala Mala earned nominations at the GLAAD Media Awards and Tribeca Film Festival, and took home second place at Tribeca for the Audience Award Documentary competition.
In SHOOT’s fascinating profile on the directors, Dan & Antonio discuss their working relationship with Moxie for branded content and commercials. “We found the company serendipitously. Working on Mala Mala early on, we wound up in a room with director Danny Levinson [president of Moxie Pictures]. Danny approaches things with an open mind—which is rare yet good to find. We were doing a film about trans Latinas in one of the last colonized places in the Western hemisphere and Danny’s reaction was ‘that’s kind of interesting because I’ve never seen it before.’ He’s not intimidated by new ideas.”
