‘Dina’ and ‘The B-Side’ named to DOC NYC’s Oscar Short List

Errol Morris’ The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography and Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini’s Dina were both named to DOC NYC’s Oscar Short List. Last year, all five of the Oscar-nominated documentaries were a part of the DOC NYC Short List program, and the winner has been screened for the past six years, making it a great indicator of Oscar potential.

Morris’ The B-Side takes a close look at the portrait photography of Elsa Dorfman as she nears retirement and reflects on her career of shooting beat poets, rockstars, families, and more. It was released on June 30 and received glowing reviews.

In Dina, which is set for release in select theaters on October 6th, Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini follow the love story of the title character and her fiancé Scott, an autistic couple on the outskirts of Philadelphia. The film, which was scored by Michael Cera, touches on the ups and downs of their unique relationship in an authentic way. It was a Grand Jury Prize winner at Sundance earlier this year.

The DOC NYC list of 15 documentaries will be screened and followed by panels with directors and collaborators from each of the films at DOC NYC PRO Short List Day on November 10. Tickets to the event can be found here.
